Singing in head voice without sounding breathy and
thin basically requires first and foremost a nice and
OPEN THROAT.
Once we open our throats, we get rid of any
constriction and it allows us to hit those high notes
in our head voice without sounding breathy. In
essence the openness in our throats gives the
voice complete freedom to ring out and resonate
properly so that it doesn’t sound weak.
How do we effectively open our throats?
Yawning!
Yup! That’s right!
Try yawning right now and observe what happens
in your throat.
Hopefully you felt some sort of movement in your
throat. Basically that is your larynx or voice box
moving down and opening up.
So in order to effectively open your throat, you need
to do what I call a “Pre-Yawn Stretch”. This means
that every time you drop your jaw and take a breath
in, you intentionally open your throat like you’re
almost about to yawn. You should do this every time
you take a breath in as you sing a song or do any
vocal exercises.
Once you get the hang of how to do that, then it’s
time to practice that with a vocal exercise to
strengthen your head voice and therefore not sound
breathy and thin.
The exercises is a 5 note descending scale on “Nor
Nor…” – check out the video to hear and practice it.
Then once you’ve got the hang of the vocal
exercises, it’s time to practice through a part of a
song you want to sing in head voice without
sounding breathy. In the video, I used Katy Perry’s
“Firework” to show you how to do it.
Step 1 is to “Nor Nor..” your way through the song
Step 2 is to then put the words of the song into the
“Nor Nor..” place
Voila!
Singing in head voice without sounding breathy and
thin!
Happy practicing! Please feel free to ask me any
questions or tell me what you think below in the answers
